Qantas has just confirmed that flights wil resume by mid-afternoon today, once a return to operations is approved by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority.

CEO Alan Joyce said the decision in the small hours of this morning by Fair Work Australia "would provide certainty for Qantas passengers and all of our employees.

Under the orders there will now be up to 21 days of compulsory negotiations between the parties, and no industrial action can take place during this period. If no agreement is reached, binding arbitration will take place under the control of Fair Work Australia.

"Operations will resume progressively from this afternoon. Our focus is bringing the schedule back to normal as soon as possible. Safety will remain our first priority at all times," Joyce said.

From correspondents in Rome
July 02, 2009 07:21pm
..A RESTAURANT in Rome which presented a Japanese tourist with a bill for nearly 700 euros ($A1224.31) after a meal with his fiancee has been closed down by the authorities, Il Messaggero daily reported.

The young couple, who have not been named, were outraged by the 695 euro bill on June 19 which included two plates of pasta, a bottle of water, a bottle of wine and a fruit salad. The service charge alone was 115 euros ($A201.14).

Their protests however were brushed off by the manager of the restaurant, located close to the tourist hub of Piazza Navona.

Il Messaggero said that the closure notice followed a raid by health inspectors and pricing investigators, ordered by the Italian capital's mayor, which found a series of breaches of hygiene and administrative regulations

4 THINGS YOU PROBABLY NEVER KNEW

There are a few things that can be
Done in times of grave emergencies.

Your mobile phone can actually be a
Life saver or an emergency tool for survival.

Check out the things that you can do with it:

FIRST
Emergency
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112.

If you find yourself out of the coverage area of
Your mobile; network and there is an emergency,
Dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing
Network to establish the emergency number for you,
And interestingly this number 112 can be dialled
Even if the keypad is locked. Try it out.

SECOND
Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry?
This may come in handy someday.
Good reason to own a cell phone: If you lock your
Keys in the car and the spare keys are at home,
Call someone at home on their mobile phone
From your cell phone.

Hold your cell phone about a foot from
Your car door and have the person
At your home press the unlock button,
Holding it near the mobile phone on their end.

Your car will unlock.

Saves someone from having to
Drive your keys to you.

Distance is no object.
You could be hundreds of miles away,
And if you can reach someone who has
The other 'remote' for your car, you can
Unlock the doors (or the trunk).

Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and
It unlocked our car over a mobile phone!'

THIRD
Hidden Battery Power
Imagine your mobile battery is very low.
To activate, press the keys *3370#
Your mobile will restart with this reserve and the
Instrument will show a 50% increase in battery.

This reserve will get charged when
You charge your mobile next time.

FOURTH
How to disable a
STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone's serial number,
Key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 #

A 15 digit code will appear on the screen.

This number is unique to your handset.

Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.

When your phone get stolen, you can phone
Your service provider and give them this code.

They will then be able to block your handset
So even if the thief changes the SIM card,
Your phone will be totally useless.

You probably won't get your phone back,
But at least you know that whoever stole it
Can't use/sell it either.

If everybody does this, there would be
No point in people stealing mobile phones.

ATM - PIN Number Reversal - Good to Know
If you should ever be forced by a robber to
Withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can
Notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse.

For example, if your pin number is 1234,
Then you would put in 4321.

The ATM system recognizes that your PIN number is
Backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine.

The machine will still give you the money you requested,
But unknown to the robber, the police will be
Immediately dispatched to the location.

A JETSTAR flight had to turn back after take-off after a passenger stabbed himself with a toothbrush.

Another traveller, who identified himself only as Adam, told the Northern Territory News the bloodied man had to be restrained by cabin crew in the incident aboard the Darwin to Sydney flight on Friday.

"They called for the restraint kit," he said.

"They tied him up, restrained him, turned around ... they didn't give us any information."

When the plane landed, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) interviewed some passengers and took the man away.

The AFP said yesterday that the man was not arrested and was not facing any charges.

It is understood the man would be dealt with by mental health authorities.

Jetstar spokeswoman Simone Pregellio said she understood the passenger had made a weapon out of the base of a toothbrush.

"It was a serious situation," she said. "Our crew are trained to prepare for all sorts of different situations."

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A wealthy Russian tried to buy a U.S. B-52 bomber from a group of shocked American pilots at an airshow near Moscow, a Russian newspaper reported Friday.

The unidentified Russian, wearing sunglasses and surrounded by bodyguards, approached the U.S. delegation and asked to buy the bomber, the Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper said.

An astounded member of the U.S. delegation said the bomber was not for sale but that it would cost at least $500 million if it were to be sold on the spot.

"That is no problem. It is such a cool machine," the Russian was quoted as saying by the newspaper, which said its reporter overheard the conversation. The bomber was not sold.

Russia's new rich, who built fantastic fortunes trading commodities and contacts after the fall of the Soviet Union, have made a name for themselves as ostentatious purchasers of everything from British football clubs to Faberge eggs.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - News Corp's Internet social network, MySpace, and Viacom Inc's MTV will unveil a plan on Thursday to host a series of discussions between U.S. presidential candidates and Internet viewers simultaneously.

The event marks the first wide-scale collaboration between the two companies, controlled by rival media moguls News Corp's Rupert Murdoch and Viacom #39;s Sumner Redstone.

The event, held in college campuses across the United States and streamed live on both sites bills itself as the first "real-time" dialogue between America's youths and 11 candidates from Senator Hilary Clinton to former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and differs from similar recent events.

Audience members at the campuses will ask questions directly. Online viewers will be able to submit questions by sending e-mails or instant messages from their computers, or by text messages from cell phones.

Online viewer reactions will be polled on both Web sites.

The series comes on the heels of a recent Democratic party presidential debate held by Google Inc's YouTube and Time Warner Inc's CNN that featured prerecorded questions from YouTube users at home and was moderated by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.

"Neither of us wanted to see yet another event with a dozen candidates giving consultant-crafted answers," MySpaceTV general manager Jeff Berman said in a telephone interview. The event aims to promote "unfiltered direct conversations."

Questions from the audience sent through instant messaging software will be selected by moderators at the event and be presented to the candidate, executives said.

The event will also be broadcast on MTV and mtvU, a 24-hour college channel in more than 750 U.S. colleges.

It is part of MTV's "Choose or Lose" campaign, launched in 1992, to engage youth voters to participate in the political process.

"There (will be) a true digital representation of the community," Ian Rowe, MTV vice president of strategic partnership, said in a telephone interview. "That has never happened before."
