Sadness

Here it is, 11:30 in the evening and I am trying to think of a great topic to write in my blog. But, to my dismay all I can think of is sadness.

The textbook definition of sadness (or sad rather), as per the American Heritage Dictionary, is:

1. Affected or characterized by sorrow or unhappiness.
2. Expressive of sorrow or unhappiness.
3. Causing sorrow or gloom; depressing: a sad movie; sad news.
4. Deplorable; sorry: a sad state of affairs; a sad excuse.
5. Dark-hued; somber.

But what really is sadness in the real world?

A man finds out that he has lost his job in this tough economic time. He cannot face his family to tell them the news. That is his sadness.

A young loses their pet puppy dog. The dog, while returns later, is lost for what it seems like an eternity. To that that is their sadness.

A young, military wife gets the most dreaded news that she can possibly get; he husband was killed in the line of duty. He will never know the joys of his marriage, or the fact that she is having his . To her, that is the ultimate sadness.

I see pictures of desolate places and people who are down on their luck. I don't see them on the television, I see them everyday when I am at work. To me, and to them, that is sadness.

Sadness is around us, like any other emotion. It's not a fantasy, but a cold hard fact of reality. You just have to rise above what is going on around you, and take things one day at a time.

Happiness

The textbook definition of happiness is:

1.Characterized by good luck; fortunate.
2.Enjoying, showing, or marked by pleasure, satisfaction, or joy.
3.Being especially well-adapted; felicitous: a happy turn of phrase.
4.Cheerful; willing: happy to help.
a.Characterized by a spontaneous or obsessive inclination to use something. Often used in combination: trigger-happy.
b.Enthusiastic about or involved with to a disproportionate degree. Often used in combination: money-happy; clothes-happy.

But what truly is happiness in this world?

A is playing on the playground. Her mother is pushing her in the swing, her hair flowing in the wind. The , at that moment in time, is happy.

A father comes home after his long day at work to see his and wife. He forgets the bad day he had at work when he sees the faces that he loves so dearly. That is his happiness.

A tattooed woman is getting another tattoo on her body. To her pain is pleasure. When the artist is finished, the woman is pleased with the result. This is her happiness.

A sports team has just won their respective championship game. The players are elated to finally have reached the pinnacle of their profession. To them, their elation is their happiness.

A baby is born in a hospital. The proud parents are waiting to hold their new for the very first time. They hold their newborn in their arms, welcoming the baby to their family. This is happiness for them.

An impoverished family sits in their living room waiting to see if they will have food to eat. A knock at the door brings tears to the family as a generous person gives them a food basket that will allow them to eat for at least two weeks. Their tears are of joy, of happiness.

A nervous young man is about to ask his girlfriend the question that will make, or break, his life. He asks the question and she says yes. His nervousness is replaced by total happiness as his girlfriend will soon be his bride.

A worker at his job has done an exceptional job at a task. He earns the praise of all his peers and most importantly his boss. This praise is, at this particular moment, his happiness.

Happiness is all around us. It's a good part of life that many of us experience.

Reality

What is reality?

The definition of reality is, from the American Heritage Dictionary, is a four-part definition:
1. The quality or state of being actual or true.
2. One, such as a person, an entity, or an event, that is actual.
3. The totality of all things possessing actuality, existence, or essence.
4. That which exists objectively and in fact.

But what really is reality?

Reality is the single mother raising her two , trying to stay ahead of the mounting pile of bills. Her reason for being is to see the joy, and happiness of her two every day of their lives.

Reality is the Vietnam War Veteran who has lost everything in his life. No home, no shelter, forced to beg on the streets and sleep wherever it’s warm and dry.

Reality is the daily struggle for people to be accepted in this world on what is in their hearts, no by how the dress, their ethnicity, or their theological beliefs.

Reality is the people who have lost their jobs in a tough economic crisis. They do not know if they will work again, or find as good a job as they once had.

Reality is an unstable person who brings a gun to a mall, a club, or school. Not realizing the pain that they cause now will cause even greater pain in the future.

Reality is the starving people in the world, with no food to eat. While many people just throw away the stuff that they do not want to eat.

Reality is madman who targets defenseless victims, terrorizing them until the fear overcomes them.

Reality is the shy schoolboy who has a crush on the cutest girl in the school. He is afraid to tell her his true feelings because he does not want to get hurt and made fun of.

Reality is the inner city youth who has big dreams of making it big in life. She wants to get out of her current situation and make a difference in the world.

Reality is the father of four, having an affair with his office co-worker. His wife doesn’t know, and won’t know for sometime.

Reality is not fiction; it’s a fact of life…everyday, everywhere.

Not that anyone is gonna read this or post comments about it, but what the hell. I'm posting this anyways.

Tips for dealing with those damn telemarketers

Hi friends, Mike here with some advice to you on how to deal with those annoying telemarketers who call at your least convienent time. You know the ones I am talking about: The ones who call you at 7:30 in the morning waking you up ("It's 10:30 here, what is your excuse!?" "I'm hungover and have only been asleep for 20 minutes leave me alone.), or during dinner time ("Hi is Mr. So and so there?" "We're eating dinner here!")

Tip 1: Pretend you are a Pacific Islander.

Example: Telemarketer: "Hi is Mike there?"

You: "BWAAAAH!!! FAA AH SAMOA!"

Tip 2: Pretend that you have Tourette's Syndrom.

You: "Hello, YOU GODDAMNED PIECE OF SHIT!" *click*

Tip 3: Repeat everything they say

Telemarketer: "Hi, is Mike there?"

You: "Hi, is Mike there?"

Tip 4: Say "What" before they can ever get a word in

Telemarketer: "H.."

You: "What"

Tip 5: Sing your greeting Operatic style.

Telemarketer: "Hi is Mike there?"

You: "Noooooooooooooooo, heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee's NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOT!"

Tip 6: Let your voicemail get it, but make the recording sound like you are really there.

Machine: "Hello?"

Telemarketer: "Hello, is Mike there?"

Machine: (5 to 10 seconds later) "Hello?"

Telemarketer: "Is Mike there?"

Machine: "Oh, you thought this was really me?!? No, it;'s my voicemail! Got ya!" (True story, this one really pissed off a telemarketer once.)

And the final tip: Listen to their spiel, sound interested, then say something totally random.

Telemarketer: "So, does this sound like something you would be interested in Mike?"

You: "Well ya know, after wasting 10 minutes of MY time allow me to waste 10 minutes of you time by explaining the differences in the space time continuation."

That, my friends, is how you deal with those pesky telemarketers. Thanks for playing along and until we meet again.

Well, Saturday is 7-7-07 and all the crazy people are trying to get married that day. Except me.

All the expected parents are trying to get their labors induced to have their babies born on that day.

Why do I find this funny? Simple: Saturday is my 30th birthday.

Lost? Ok, let me recap for you.

1. I was born 7-7-77
2. I was born at 7 minutes after midnight
3. Count the number of letters in Michael. (7)
4. When I came home from the hospital, I weighed 7lbs. 7oz.

5. When I was measured at birth, I was exactly 21 inches long.

6. My phone number has four 7's in it. (Accidental by the phone company)

So, 7-7-07? Been there, done that already..for 30 years now.

Thanks for playing along, hope ya enjoyed it.

I am just numb right now, a state of shock. How could one of the best sports-entertainers of all time commit such a tragic act of violence and brutality?

Of course, if you aren't sure who I'm talking about, it's one Chris Benoit. It's public knowledge now that Benoit killed his wife, Nancy, their , Daniel, and then himself over the course of the past few days. The question on everybody's mind is this: Why?

I first met Chris in 2003 when World Wrestling Entertainment came to Portland, OR. To me he seemed like such a reserved, subdued guy. We talked after the show about a myriad of topics, with the exception of his profession.

I ran into him less than a year later, same place, this time at a pay-per-view event. He was genuinely (sic) happy for me that this was my first televised pay-per-view event.

In 2005, a mutual friend of ours had passed away. We talked for a bit, before our lives had taken us on our separate ways.

I had watched Chris on the various WWE television shows, but lost contact with him as each time the WWE came to Portland he wasn't on the show.

Then, the horrible news hit. Last night, Vince McMahon (the chairman of the board for WWE) stood inside of an empty arena and annouced that Chris, his wife and , were found dead earlier.

After that, the media circus that followed...Chris Benoit murdered his wife and . This was not the same man I met, and was an acquientence with. The Chris Benoit I remember was the soft spoken and respectful guy.

It's sad at how the media makes a monster out of a guy, after he has passed away.

Well, Happy Cinco de Mayo everybody. I hope you get your fill of Mexican food, Mexican beer, and of course Tequilla (remember friends: The worm can be your friend)

After a hellacious week at work (including 2 different inventories, plus a customer collapsing at my counter) I am ready for this weekend off. What am I gonna do? The same thing as I always do: A big pile of NOTHING.

The countdown has begun to the next A.F.F. Portland Party on June 30th. I can't wait, since I start my vacation then...plus it's 7 days before my 30th b-day.

Well, that's all I've got for now. As Ron White says, "Thanks for playin along, I hope ya enjoyed it."

**This post is dedicated to all the victims who tragically lost their lives this past Monday morning in the tragedy at Virginia Tech University.**

Well as I try to figure out what things are going on in the world today, I can't help but think that something is missing.

What it is I don't know. I can't even begin to think. Maybe it will come to me in my sleep.

If you are about to ask me why in the hell I started my blog like that, I swear to the Gods of Olympus (yeah, I know they are just a myth but hell it's my blog damnit!) I am gonna scream, yell, hollar, and just be loud in general.

There now that I have that out of my system (which felt pretty damn good actually) let's get down to brass tacks, as someone once said. The clock is ticking, the countdown has begun. We are T-Minus 92 days and counting until....GASP!! I TURN 30!?!?!?!

Ya know I've often said that if I have ever made it to the age of 30, then just hand me the gun now. All kidding aside with some of the things that I've done in life, I am surprised that I haven't died already. For example:

Age 7 - Playing on the train tracks as a train was coming in the opposite direction. It was the day before my 8th birthday and my friend and I were bored. Well, needless to say I got my ass whooped several times for that little event.

Ages 7, 8, 9 and 10 - Sand cliff jumping. Exactly what it says. My friends and I would often jump off sand cliffs that were 8 to 12 feet high, and land head first (sometimes buries up to our waists) in the sand. Not exactly brilliant on our part.

Age 18 - Falling out of the back of a moving vehicle. A truck actually. This little gem caused me to have a concussion, and all 7 of my vertabrae to be compressed (which still are today)

Age 26 - Random skull bashing. Of course when you've had way too much to drink, you start to do funny things. In my case, I think I set some sort of record for braincells lost by bashing my own head into a payphone 47..yes FORTY-SEVEN..times in a row. My reason? I just wanted to see my own blood.

So, there ya have it. That's just a small smattering of the stupid things I have survived in my life. Now, if I can only just get past this fear of turning 30, I should be ok in the long run.

Thanks for playing along, hope ya enjoyed it.

Ok, so here's a what a typical day is like for me. Nothing fancy, nothing special. But, for the really good stuff it's against Federal Law for me to talk about it (damnn that H.I.P.P.A.)

5:30 AM - Wake up in a room that has concrete for flooring and no windows. Damn it's cold in here.

5:35 - Head outside for a cigarette. Damnit, forgot the bathrobe. Well, at least the neighbors got a show.

6:00 - Try to make coffee. Damn, no more coffee.
6:10 - Hit the shower.
6:11 - Hit my head while getting into the shower
6:15 - NO MORE HOT WATER!?!?!?!
6:30 - Cold shower finished, where's the bandaids?
6:45 - Waiting for traffic report, damn backed up again.

7:00 AM - Out the door.
7:01 - Forgot lunch
7:30 AM - In downtown Portland now, walking to a MAX station.

7:45 - Arrive at MAX station
7:46 - Get hit up for a cigarette ("hey man, ya got an extra smoke?" "Nope, my cigarettes only come in packs of 20's. Sorry.")

8:05 - Get off the MAX and go to work
9:00 AM - Start work, how many more hours until I am off?

11:00 AM - Break time. Where does the time go when you are counting prescriptions?

12:00 PM - Relief shows up, time for lunch.
12:10 - Head to Lloyd Center Mall's food court. Damn, so many choices so little time.

12:45 - Settle on Steak Escape for lunch.
1:00 - Lunch's over already?!!?
3:15 - After numerous idiots, morons, and just plain dumbasses for customers (mainly asking if I can let them use the public restroom), last break of the day.

4:30 - Work day's over, finally.
5:15 - Where in the hell is a cop when ya need one?

5:45 - Back home, head back to the dungeonesque room.

And so ends a typical day for me. Any questions?
