Ice Sharks Don't Really Exist

The north wind, howled down the lake. It blew the powdered snow, across his path, in horizontal sheets, that stung his cheeks. Brilliant midday sun, belied the harsh cold and blinded him. He lowered his covered head and trudged forward. When they were in love - they would walk that expanse together... laughing, as they slipped their way, across the polished ice.

He moved steadfastly, in spite of the arctic conditions. Though you might have thought, he would be concerned. Would he find his way to safety, on the other side - before freezing... or falling through the ice?

When she was with him,  that was the joke , they always shared. They both knew, there was never, any danger, of either event occurring. The ice was three feet thick and they were dressed, like Everest climbers.

When they would finally arrive (at that other side), the families from the ice huts, would greet them with warm hugs. Shots of alcohol, would always be shared. They would toast to health, to happiness and to long lives. Heck... eventually... they would toast to the fish. He would pull out the sandwiches and whatever else he'd brought in his knapsack, and they would all party. She'd laugh with him and with those hardy men and women, as they fished, for whatever they were catching - through those ice holes. Snowmobiles - chased by dogs and piloted by teens - would buzz around, racing across the ice and snow. By late day, the fishing would be done and the ice holes would be quickly, freezing over. They would have eaten, and drank and bated hooks, all afternoon. Plumes of grey smoke, would rise from wood stoves, as those shacks, became welcome shelters for the  frozen. There were many... who huddled in there; laughing, as marshmallows were being toasted and hot chocolate, was being served.

On this day, he was alone. He was halfway to the fishermen, as he paused and looked forward at the scattered ice huts. He then turned, and looked back, at that black dot, by  his shore. It was where, he had parked his car.

When she was with him... she'd laugh and make fun, of his resolve. She'd always walk ahead, beckoning him, to catch up to her.

"Quick... Quick... Come here. I see an ice shark, " she'd holler and wave to him, as she stared into the black ice. He'd always run up to her, as if it were true... just to amuse her. She would always reward him, with a loving kiss. Ice sharks don't really exist. I guess, a sturgeon might look like a shark, if you didn't know any better.

There were no jokes, or laughter... or kisses, to share with anyone, on this day. The wind... hardly cared. It mocked him... whistling in his ears. He shielded his eyes against the sun, adjusted his glasses and peered into the whiteness. He looked at those dotted huts in the distance - through that wind swept haze. Then... he turned around. With his back to those shacks... and those fishermen - he slowly made his way, towards  his shoreline.

When they were together, she'd ask him, if they could hurry back. Her feet were usually freezing... by then.

There was no rush now. He'd be at his car, in less than an hour. The unopened bottle of vodka, resting in his pack, would still be cold, by the time he got home. He was standing, on a large patch of clear ice, as he bent down to adjust his boots. Just as he rose from his crouch, he saw, a shark swim by. "That was impossible... " he thought. "Ice sharks don't really exist."

So...
Can you enjoy, going on adventures alone; or do you only go, when you have company to join you?
Have you ever been ice fishing?

I know that I can go on adventures when I am alone. . . I don't need to be with anyone to do that. And I can have fun, when I'm off on that adventure. But... I'll say this : I much prefer going on adventures when I'm with family or friends. There should someone with me to verify that UFO sighting? Right? A simple thing like going to a show, is much more fun with someone with you. If it's a walk in the park or forest or something like that... then I can be alone and have a great time. Then again... how much trouble or adventure is there when you are alone in the forest ?

Well of course I've been ice fishing. It's a great time. Usually someone's got the BBQ going, the huts are all nice and warm and cozy and the liquid refreshments are abundant. Funny thing is... I don't recall us really catching that many fish... Oh well ! I'd recommend that type of outing for family or friends any time. It's a blast !

I've had fun exploring things on my own, but prefer having some company. I would not be caught any where near that much frozen ice or those kind of temperatures.

I have never been ice fishing.

I don't mind adventures alone, I took a cruise by myself last year. I loved it. Sure, it would have been fun to share with someone...but, one of the things I loved best about that vacation was I could do what I wanted when I wanted...if I didn't feel like sitting on deck, I could go for a walk, no one to convince me to do something else. I guess I am still at that stage where I'm reveling in being able to decide what I want to do and not have anyone upset or disagreeing with me. (A lot of decisions during my marriage weren't mine.)

Well... That's sad... Hmmm... Tell you what... If you're ever coming up here - let me know. There are a ton of ice hut places on the lakes that haven't got that global warming memo and they are minutes from my home. We'd have a blast! 😊🎅🍸🍷

Well.... You know exactly how much fun those places are. Catch any fish? 🐟🐬🐋🐡

You're like me. No worries about being alone, but it's fun to share the memories with someone else afterwards.
You would probably love the whole ice hut vibe. Dress warm and party on the ice. 🎉❄️ When you get chilled, step inside that heated hut... drink something warm then - out you go again. Some of the larger ice hut camps have bathrooms as well.... 🍷🍸 You'd be a pro in no time! 😁

I hear what you're saying about being with someone when on an adventure... that's for sure. 😊
That ice hut thing? It's not as cold as you think, when you're dressed for it. If you like tailgate parties... that's what this is like - except on ice. It's a blast! I'm sure you'd be fine! 🍸🍸🍸🍷🍷🍷🌿🌿🌿 Yep! 😱😬

Ahhh... I understand what you're saying. Making your own decisions is great and liberating! 😊
You'd love the ice hut (fishing) experience. It's sort of like a boat cruise, except without the wet water, the warm weather and the boat... Ummm yep. Exactly the same. And nobody would tell you what to do either. You could sit on any part of the lake you'd want to... 😁😎🛳️ Refreshments are on the house if you're ever in the area... Oh and I have extra mitts and scarves... ❄️🔥

You seem like the type of person who can manage things on her own or with a gang. Did you ever eat any of the fish? 🐟
I imagine that the MN experience is pretty close to what it's like over here. You'd fit right in... Just don't wear white. We wouldn't want to loose you. 🔥❄️😨

I am a strong and independent woman who has no problem getting out and doing things -visiting cultural and educational venues, shopping, movies, dinner, travel etc. on my own. Of course it's nice to have company but when that's not possible, as Nike says, I, 'Just Do It'.
Been fishing many times and yes, I still know how to bait a hook. Never tried ice fishing though - sounds cold but very social.

You'd probably enjoy ice fishing in those huts. It's more of a tail gait party that lasts all day than any hard core fishing. More of an all day picnic in the snow. Thanks for popping in... ❄️😊🌲⛄

Hmmm. Strong and independent... Kool... 😊 Well... If you know how to bait a hook you'd do fine on the ice. They use minnows so not much effort and the fishing is done with poles propped on tripods. When the fish bites you run over.. You'd probably love the food and the vibe as well. It's very relaxed.. Do you skate as well? ❄️⛄🌲

I used to take vacations to the Caribbean Islands by myself once or twice a year. Before 20 I would hop on my motorcycle and just take off. No one would hear from me for weeks. LOL

I take it it has to be really cold for there to be ice fishing...so that's a giant no.

No one would hear from you for weeks... sounds about right and sounds like a lot of fun. 😉😎 I imagine even if I mentioned that winter clothes exist or that it's like a tailgate party - except on snow... This is going to have 0 impact on your thoughts about even thinking about it..., lol No worries. I guess you're built for Global Warming... ⛄❄️🔥🏖️🌵
