"Learning Curve" Pt. 1

He had always hated the phrase "butterflies in your stomach." It somehow made light of the feeling that you truly had when nervous. It didn't give the heart pounding, dry mouthed, stomach churning feeling any true justice.
"Butterflies my ass," he thought to himself. "It feels like I swallowed a whole swarm of bees."
Standing up from the couch, he walked to the mirror for what had to have been the fourth time in the last ten minutes. The face that stared back at him was not the normal reflection he was used to. At this moment all he saw was a pale shade of his former self. He searched his eyes for the spark that usually smoldered there. It was that spark that first caught her eye, and he felt that if it wasn't there all of this was in vain. As he searched, he remembered how this started.

She had first been introduced to him through a friend of his. Having a break in between classes and nothing to do, he sometimes would sit in with his friend in her class. More often than not this translated into him taking a quick nap while his friend took notes and tried to act like she didn't know him when he started snoring. After class was over one day, the professor came over to talk to his friend. Never having given the professor much thought, this was the first time he took the chance to notice how beautiful she was. Shoulder length blond hair framed a face that carried the worry lines that came from dealing with young adults who thought they had the world figured out already. Grayish-blue eyes seemed to look through him, even as her soft pale red lips formed a smirk of recognition.
"You are never going to pass Friday's quiz if you continue to get your power naps in during class," she had warned him. Her words were serious, but at the same time he detected a bit of a smile as she said them. He knew right away that he liked this woman.
"Sorry teach," he had confidently replied. "The lessons you've been showing me in my dreams have been to exciting to pass up." With that, he knew it was probably time to leave. He didn't know what had made him say it, besides the fact that he was thinking with his lower head instead of the one on top of his neck. His friend soon caught up to him, but her laughter wasn't helping the situation.

He was so sure that he had made a fool of himself that day, that he decided it would be best to find another way to occupy his time during break. Having decided to put it out of his mind, he was quite surprised when a the next week his friend told him that her professor had asked about him.
"What, was she wondering why that snoring jackass wasn't disturbing her lecture today?" he joked to cover the sudden nervous knot that had formed in him. "You can let her know that I won't be bothering the class again. I don't want to push my luck."
"She was wondering where you were," his friend replied. It was her next words though, that caused the knot to drop painfully into his stomach. "She wants you to meet her after her class tomorrow at her office. She said she had to discuss something with you."
He had known that his mouth was going to get him into trouble one day. It had always been his biggest problem, he lacked the filter between brain and mouth that kept the normal human from just spewing thoughts out onto the world. He didn't know what the punishment for hitting on a professor was, but he was convinced that he was going to at least get his ass chewed off. So, resigned to his fate he wrote down the office info and time from his friend, and wandered off to try to enjoy his last day on campus.

"Lucky idiot," he muttered to himself. His reflection stared back at him with a mix of humor and condescension. Not able to take the pressure of his own gaze he threw himself back down on the couch. He couldn't be to hard on himself, as things had gone differently than he had thought they would.
