Time

It's a funny thing....

For some people, it's fluid, kind of like a guideline.

"Be here at 10:15 so we have time to do your COVID intake and get you punched in before orientation at 10:30."

They come strolling in at 10:35.....

"Hey, I was waiting for you where you said to meet you."

Really??

"I was expecting you at 10:15, which was the start of your shift today."

"Oh.... Well.... I thought orientation started at 10:30."

Awkward silence as new employee scans their brain for the plausible excuse for being late.

"It does start at 10:30, it is now 10:35. You're 20 minutes late. Going forward, you will need to be on time for each shift."

It's a sad state of affairs when you have to explain to people what being on time means.

For people like me, whose every moment during the workday is linked to a timeline, being late creates an issue. When I have a meeting scheduled at 10:30 am, and you show up 20 minutes late at 10:35 am, guess what that means??

It means I have to LEAVE MY MEETING to get your fucking ass going in an orientation you are late for.

So, while time may only be fluid for you, or a guideline for when you are expected to be somewhere, for others it is not.

The most disrespectful thing you can do to another person is waste their precious, little time.

I was raised to be on time. And that meant that you were at least 10-15 minutes early. You have to allow for traffic or other minor delays. And if you show up early for a meeting, interview or whatever, you wait until that person is ready. As long as you're on time, that's what counts.
Me too.... You know, in order to get my degree, I was required to take a class in college all about this stuff. I wonder if they still do this.... It covered everything from resume writing, how to dress, business etiquette, how to effectively research a possible destination that you may be asked to relocate too....

    People recognize you? 🤔 Hmmm...
My trouble is that I follow too many people. I read all their blogs then I want to be polite and it dawns on me that I should TRY and make an effort to be glib or cute or witty and there... is where the problem lies.
    Nobody likes a simple emoji.
So, I'm stuck for a minute or two, scribbling something. And even at that - the result isn't stellar.
Add up all those seconds and voilà... a bunch of half hours. And those 30 minutes add up.
If I don't make a comment, I feel bad - for some of them. It's a guilt thing. I'm trying to be polite.
You know what I mean? I wonder if any of them would give a shit if I just stopped by and said nothing?
    Ya think I'm over-thinking this?
    What do you think?
I seem to have drifted off topic...
There are times when I will stop by and read a blog post and not comment. It doesn't mean I didn't like the post, or found it interesting, it's usually because I'm limited on time but still wanted to keep current. I like to put thought into my comments and to me, they're usually meaningful in some way. Whether it's to be funny, or to share a memory of some sort..... Some of my most loyal readers never comment at all, but when things seem amiss or I haven't posted in a bit, they're checking in with me to make sure things are ok. I find that just as impactful as someone who leaves a comment on every post.

You are absolutely correct, time is money. You can't make money if you don't put your time in at work...

I hate being late.......still get stressed at the possibility, beforehand......but then if for reasons beyond my own control I'm late, well, it cannae be helped.

I really dislike people being late because they've been careless though. It's always struck me as selfish.

And it doesn't bode well for a new employee to saunter in whenever it suits them.........that's really not how it works!
I hate being late too, it's one of my anxiety triggers. I am constantly timing things.... I know the exact minute I need to leave my apartment in the morning so I can miss the traffic and drop the spawn off and make it to work on time. If I'm off by even 2 minutes, it throws everything off. Do I still make it to work on time? Yes.... why does it bother me? Grrr.... Anxiety.

When I worked in manufacturing, the Director of Operations was kind of a mentor to me as I was working my way up through the ranks. He was always talking about the value of time. Time is a precious commodity that should be valued, you never want to waste another persons time. They aren't going to remember what your excuse is, they're going to remember it happened.

The problem is, a lot of people are working from home right now. That same sense of urgency a person feels in an office isn't there when they are sitting on their couch, drinking their coffee, working from home. I feel for your friend, that's really gotta suck.

I'm always early too... But, I like to be 'right on time'. I'd rather wait in my car for a few minutes than arrive too early. That's another one of my pet peeves. I don't know how many times people show up 20-30 minutes early and expect me to drop everything because they've arrived.

Um, there's a reason why I schedule things. I realize you were in town and thought you'd take care of your donation request since you were here, but, I'm in the middle of a conference call and I told you that specific time because THAT'S WHAT WORKS FOR ME.

I guess you could call it ; Force of my own habit !! If I have a specific time too be somewhere ; I will show-up 10 to 15 minutes early , depending on my driving time too get there !! At my age ; I guess some would consider that as " Old School Thinking " !!!
Our generation thinks this way because it was something that was instilled in us. Being on time was a form of respect for another individual. I'm here to say, this next generation does not think this way. I told a new employee today that punching in even 1 minute past their scheduled 'in' time was considered a late and they thought I was joking. When I assured them I was not they couldn't fathom the thought of how harsh we were. Good lord...

I don't spend all that much time on here.... Read some blogs, write some posts, from time to time catch up with old friends.... I was surprised the other day when someone recognized my writing and remembered my old screenname.
