fotos???

As you probably have noticed, about 1/3 of member photos are not showing up. This is due to one of our three storage devices having a capacity issue. The GOOD news is that we have all of the original photos on another device, NO PHOTOS ARE LOST, AND we just installed $750,000 worth of new (e.g., faster) storage device as it we already planned to upgrade this storage (the other 2/3 of photos are already moved). The bad news is that it will take a few days as we copy the photos on the new hardware.

Our top developers and system admins have been working around the clock since this started. Originally, they were copying photos based on the newest first. I've now instructed them to start by copying 1 photo per user based on their last login so that everyone has at least one photo quickly. Additionally, any new photos that you upload will show up right away as it uses the new storage. Now might be a great time to upload some of your recent photos.

I completely understand the frustration of seeing your photos turn into silhouettes. We will be giving membership extensions to those directly affected as soon as I get an update on the photo copying time.

I realize that this post it not the best place for me to talk about the site improvements of the last couple of months. We have been focusing on site stability (yes, the irony), bug fixes and speed. Prior to this hardware issue, the site had the most stable month in the last two years. You may have also noticed that pages now load up about 40% faster than before. We hear your feedback.
Update 8/22 - with over 20 million photos being resized, we are hopeful that we will have all visible photos updated by late Sunday. We are keeping track of the date where all your photos are restored and will be extending members proportionately.
Andrew
