A Slice of Politics (or The Ukraine Won't Leave The News)

I stumbled onto this topic after reaching a rather dumbfounded reaction to the sentences given two individuals who had kidnapped, robbed, and assaulted their victim along with a 14 year old and another individual yet to be tried. I was in a bit of a daze. How does one get less than ten years for such a thing when the assault aspect is carving a swastika into the victim's forehead?

But stumble I did.

(I'm still looking for more information about the assault et al. In Portland, of all places, but I digress.)

Allen West (hopefully no relation to Adam) went off on a rant about how Obama is similar to Chamberlain. Obama is just as guilty of allowing atrocities to occur in the Ukraine as Chamberlain was of letting Hitler do the same in Europe.

He's a moron.

Let's break this down on the points of logical fallacy. First off. Chamberlain did share the theory that diplomacy could resolve issues where no one else did, a possible link to what Obama has been doing with regards to sanctions. Chamberlain put out a few of those, to be sure. There the relationship between the two comes to a full and complete stop.

Chamberlain was aware that Britain was not yet ready to play its role in another world war. With Germany unable to pay reparations after the first and British losses being as high as they had been, the country needed time to prepare to take on a country that had chosen to militarize rather than either pay its war reparations or strengthen the civilian economy. If you can conquer other countries and take their things, then you don't need to produce your own, after all. So Germany focused on rebuilding their broken egos (it hurts to lose a war and be forced to pay its costs) by fortifying and arming itself before spreading its wings and flying. Britain had been working on civilian recovery without the reparations that never came. It neither had the energy nor the funds to build and fortify, let alone prepare for a war.

Germany invaded country after country, and Chamberlain bought the British people time to prepare for war. Without the time, even Churchill couldn't have saved them. Chamberlain was not weak. He just knew that timing is key in any conflict. And I say this, with the one historical figure in history that I'd really want to meet being Churchill.

Obama isn't Chamberlain. The US could wage an ugly war against Russia in the Ukraine and is substantially better equipped and trained to do so than Britain was during the height of World War II. The comparison just doesn't hold in logical terms.

Obama is FDR, though. Obama has a country that isn't interested in fighting a war that doesn't directly impact them. Look at the people protesting over young men dying in confrontations with police, people who will never leave the comfort of their beds to help another individual and will always focus on home. That is the America that FDR was dealing with, and it is Obama's as well. Apathy is the stalwart of genocide. Look at Darfur.

Where Chamberlain did not allow Great Britain to enter World War II as early as Mr. West would argue that he should have to prevent the loss of human lives, FDR and the US didn't enter World War II for two years after that point. Were the atrocities only the responsibility of the British Prime Minister, then, and not in any way related to the reticence of the American people? Oh, what a small pea is shaking around in that tin pot West calls a head. (Perhaps it is Kanye that he's related to, not Adam?) Maybe he should talk to Romney about how the moronic statements one makes as attempting to gain public office (voluntary deportation... how could anyone vote for him after that gaff? Deportations are legal orders compelling one to leave the country and the ride home, after all. Nothing voluntary in that.)? It couldn't hurt. Perhaps their peas can be friends?

But I encountered West's moronic foray into the world of speech through Blue Nation Review, and need says that I should take a moment to poke at the holes in the retort it provided. Sleeping dogs don't lay in this blog, after all.

The editor chose to address the comment. He said that West was playing on people's fears and stoking the embers of prejudice. Oh, how we will trot out the race card when we can't make an honest argument against something.

The American people, as a rule, do not care about starving in the US let alone starving people in Africa. The only reason ebola is on our list of concerns is because it crossed the Atlantic and showed up in Atlanta. Damned if you can't appreciate flesh eating bacteria when they make it onto your continent, after all. Who cared about terrorism in the Middle East until the Trade Center fell? The Europeans didn't care until they started bombings in their countries as well, though Britain was perhaps a little better prepared for dealing with the IRA for decades.

So, to sum up the arguments, West is a moron, and the Blue Nation Review isn't well written.

History holds tons of comparisons one can draw, and I'd connect ground troops in the Ukraine to the same in the former Yugoslavia. Who doesn't miss Tito and the peace that he brought to that area? He was a cross between Mother Theresa and Stalin, to be sure, but he kept the genocide at bay. Go figure that in a dictator.

You can argue perceptions of history. Obama appears weak , inept and unable to make tough decisions. He says don't cross this line and does nothing when you do. His enemies don't respect him and his friends don't trust him. It is perception and reality.

He's doing what the voters elected him to do, though. His allies overseas didn't get a vote, and neither did his enemies abroad.

Of course, there are many who didn't vote for him who would say following campaign promises makes him weak. Not everyone likes him, but I like him better now that the God complex has worn away.

There's really not much that i disagree with here. I think it's fair to compare him to Chamberlain in the sense that we are in a bad spot ourselves and i think we should question whether or not we can handle another directionless conflict. I'm still angry that we have bombs smarter than the average public school student cause the bombs can at least find The Ukraine on a map.
But I'm digressing.

Obama could end all hunger, war and suffering in the world and the conservative lunatic fringe are still going to think he's weak. As a start, we should send out all the war mongering open carry jackasses to fill up the front lines.. they have their own guns and bullets, we can save some money there.
But how the hell am i supposed to masturbate to these topics, Deb?
