My teen mini's came home last week talking about their Pep rally. I asked them what their school anthem was. They looked at me like I asked if their school was on Mars. I then sang a bit of my H.S anthem and U of Az . They still didn't understand. I then used the Star Spangled Banner as an example. I guess school anthems have fallen our of fashion. Thank the higher powers for major sporting events...otherwise our youth would be clueless.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

What a great post! Informed, entertaining, well-written, entirely inappropriate for a sex-site blog... perfect!

Oddly enough, your commentary here did NOT have me hearing music in my head, but rather snippets from Eddie Izzard's "Do you have a flag?" bit.

Well done!

well the French national anthem was played at several NHL hockey games tonight... in Philadelphia and Boston I believe there are french (France not Quebec) players on the teams....

if national anthems inspire pride in freedoms that have been fought for and won, I think that is a good thing.

Hey Keith! Great post idea!!! Will check those anthems I don't know (many of those you listed) and just wanted to let you know "La Marseillaise" is also, by far, my favorite It's exactly how you described it: makes you want to stand up, grab a pitchfork, and go open up some Royal and spread their guts out, because it must have been hard to wait and drag each one of the filthy fat bloodsucker all the way to the guillotine hahaha!!! Ahem...sorry. got a bit carried away there

Lastly, look for "Aux armes etc..." by Serge Gainsbourg, you'll see....oh, and lokk for the lyrics, most of all! Muah!!!
That was cool. Reggae style... thanks, Vanessa.

Well well. A feisty Canadian. Hey! I said it was okay, didn't I? Besides the USA one, Oh Canada is the anthem I get to hear the most. And Canadians love to rub it in our noses. A friendly rivalry, fortunately. If they can't be Americans, the next best thing for folks to be is Canadian. Don't you agree?

Thanks for congrats.

IT ISN'T WALTZING MATILDA! Oh Keith, I do believe you are wrong, go check your facts. I love that one, it was the best one you've listed.

    Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me,
And he sang as he watched and waited till his billy boiled
You'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.

It's not precisely correct though, everyone knows a watched billy never boils.

I'll be humming that one now. hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm, Waltzing Matilda, you'll come a Waltzing Matilda with me.
Ha! Thanks for the most excellent pun! We collect em here in The Venting Blog, yanno. Your contribution will now be logged into the archives.

I'm humming along with ya. It's a catchy tune...

I attended 3 different high schools all 3 years, and never sang one of em. At least they still have pep rallies. Those were fun! Can't recall the one from my alma mater, at ASU. I went to all our games, though. Basketball and soccer, too.

I don't write about sex much. Unless I'm making fun of it. Possibly a result of a Catholic influenced - pre-pill - sexually suppressed socialization process.

Or not. Ha! Hadn't seen the Izzard routine previously, but I loved it. Thanks, humorlife!

They certainly serve to rally a people as witnessed by scenes coming out of Paris today. La Marseillaise was sung as the people left the stadium where 3 bombers had attacked. It was sung in defiance, and it was sung in solidarity.

This post was timely, it seems. Unfortunate. Today my heart is heavy.

Yeah, England uses "God Save the Queen," but it doesn't use the really good version...

"Canada's is ok. I have to hear it a lot as I watch sporting events from that country. I pretty much ignore theirs though. It shouldn't exist. They oughtta be playing The Star Spangled Banner up there if ya want my two cents. But for a quirk in history they would be, too. Canada should have been ours! "

did you write this yourself or do research? The US national anthem is a melody from an old English drinking song, not martial.
Yes, these are my original thoughts. I did know the origin. In my research I was looking beyond these shores, rather than inward. Thank you, for correcting me.

It is both jealousy and envy. Also, it is a sort of tradition in The Venting Blog to poke at my Canadian neighbors, and rile them up. I am actually a great admirer of Canada. It's people, and its history. I am particularly impressed with how y'all handled yourselves in WW1. Truly inspiring!
