Symbol of a Nation's Pride
Symbol of a Nation's Pride So, I went down to the Catawba River this afternoon to hike the trails of the McDowell Nature Preserve. I saw something I have not seen in the wild before. A bald eagle! I was near the river's edge, and he came swooping across the cove, wings spread wide as he swerved and dodged two little blackbirds who were harassing him. As he turned one final time I got a good look at him from about 25 yards out. That was when I knew for sure what sort of raptor he was. His white-feathered head was stunning in the sunlight. Yanno, upon further reflection what I witnessed is somewhat of a metaphor for my country. A proud nation being pecked at by pesky little terrorist crows. blog on! |

I saw two of them perched in a tree on the side of the highway in Western Tennessee when we were on our way to visit my oldest daughter. They really are AMAZING. So glad we have both gotten such a treat!

Always so special when we see something magnificent in the wild, instead of behind bars at a zoo, or in a cage. I am still yet to see a Koala in the wild.

I think it is a fact of life that no matter what your size, something smaller will try and take a piece out of you. blog on!

Thank you, Shy. I agree with you, of course. It is good news that we stopped using the poisons that were harming the raptors in the environment. Also, that we have tried to provide natural areas for them to flourish. blog on!

It was totally cool, emeritebelle! I stayed there for a long time hoping to see more. Say, aren't you running out of "sleeps" by now? blog on!

Definitely a treat. The last time I saw a Bald Eagle was on this last Thanksgiving Day (I saw it flying over Lake Houston). Aw, but shucks, I love blackbirds--Crows, Ravens and Red-winged Blackbirds and Mynah birds. The Crows have made a comeback after West Nile virus tore through their ranks. Guess I'll have to think of the terrorists as Avian flu or something. At first, when I saw Catawba River, I thought, "Wasn't that where Deliverance was filmed?" But, no, that was the Chattooga River. Gotta love those Indian names. John Lee Hooker Recommended: [blog lucyjane78]
