When I was a teenager in the 70's, my friends and I used to howl with laughter listening to his comic tapes. Of course, my mom wouldn't allow us to listen to him (or Cheech and Chong). I'll never forget his rendition of the Exorcist (from memory so probably not right on): --If black people were doing the exorcist, the whole movie would have lasted five minutes. Dad would come home, walk into the kid’s room and say: “Smells like shit in here. Some devilish shit at that. Bitch, whatchoo doin in bed so late? Get out that bed and git downstairs and help yo mama clean up the house. And get that cross outa your pussy!” -- Thanks Keith for helping us remember. I'll miss him.

Thanks for chiming in everyone. His stand-up comedy was his best work, and what prompted me to post a tribute to him. Hollywood is a pimp, and they used him. (Heck, I woulda took their money too, just like he did). His films suck for the most part, except there was one I remember I really liked. I think it was called Which Way Is Up?, although I haven't seen it in probably 20 years. His comedy employed both black culture and racial issues, and it was accepted by a broad audience of white folk. I was one of those folk, and the perspective he gave me helped me to better understand how things were in the ghettos and black neighborhoods of our nation. A small part in my ever expanding world view perhaps, but an important one for me as a young man, trying to make sense of the world.

I live in a very beautiful but very secluded part of Maui and the 'rich and famous' often come over to get away from it all. Richard had a house for a number of years and I was lucky enough to spend a little time with him, about ten years ago. He was very real and as down to earth as you'd think he'd be. Trouble was, there were always people around him that took advantage of him, including several hundred of his ex-wives. (Exagerrating, here). He knew it but figured the hell with it. I really really liked him. Yeah, I'm still [blog 1hotwahine]

He was a urban hero for us growing up... When we were young my brothers & I used to sneak & put his albums on. Not knowing all along that our parents could here every word from the connecting vents... We ALL enjoyed him.... Some people are just genuine, & he was genuinely funny. R.I.P, bro', R.I.P!
