As promised WIRELESS SECURITY

First step of securing any wireless connection is to rename the network (SSID) from the default router name. This is just like changing the locks in a house, now instead of a generic brand lock, with unknown amount of keys lying around you have a name brand lock.

Then turn on your WPA or WEP encryption. All these can be accessed from the basic wireless setup menu on your router. Congragulations just like locking your door before heading out to work, you have locked your wireless system, but we all know locks can be picked. The renaming / password scheme will stop unassuming people trespass on your computer, but will not stop a dedicated hacker.

Second step, dedicate a folder or drive for the files you want to share. Never ever share the root folder of the drive (in most instances C:\) or any of your Windows folder. Also, dedicate a folder for information you don't want to get out, like bank accounts, credit cards and make that folder a Private folder (right click on folder select Properties, click on the Sharing tab, check the box that says Make this folder private. If we continue on the lock plot, this is just like also locking the deadbolt and hiding your valuables.

If you need any help with these tasks, please feel free to contact me via NoStrings mail.

And please do keep in mind, people lock their doors everyday but still get robbed. Same goes for your computer too, these will prevent most common thugs wandering into your computer, but not someone who does this kind of crap for a living. Even The Pentagon has been hacked many times-altough they own some of the best equipment, technicians, security consultants and many redundant firewalls to protect them.

thank you for the suggestions...I have the wireless secured, password protected, and I promise to be careful which folders are shared!!

(Maybe I will need to throw in some toast with those eggs and fruit for breakfast!! LOL!)

I know it sounds scary, but tell you the truth if you do what I say in my post, snatching your purse at the mall is easier.

I can't claim you will be 100% secure if you do what I say, if I could, I would be working for a internet security firm making million bucks an hour.

But doing what I say, you will prevent common thugs breaking into your system

As I said to uluv7 feel free to contact me if you need any further assistance.

BTW, I have a question about international bank transfers, knowing you work for a bank, would you be kind enough to shoot me an e-mail so we can discuss it further ?

good for you for posting this. I got a wireless router last summer and wasn't successful at setting up a secured connection. A couple weeks ago I switched from a DSL line to cable...in the process, for some reason my wireless router wasn't cooperating with the whole mix. So I had to go through the setup process again for the router and "re-install" it and voila - this time victory was mine!

I feel much better about the whole thing now...
